– Giving an oral presentation at a scientific meeting is a great way to advance your medical career. The prospect of presenting your original work to colleagues and peers may be intimidating, and it can be difficult to know how to approach it.
It is important to remember that although it may be daunting, an oral presentation is one of the best ways to get your work out there, and so should be looked upon as an exciting and invaluable opportunity.1
– Even when you are an experienced presenter, creating and facilitating a workshop can seem intimidating. With some careful planning and preparation, an effective RANZCOG workshop can give attendees the opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge in an engaging and enjoyable way.

– Recent trainee surveys have indicated that the provision of feedback is at times not meeting expectations.
This module has been created so that all who either provide or receive feedback are clear on what the expectations are during a trainee’s learning journey.
– Clinicians need to communicate information about risk to patients on a daily basis. Often this requires analysing and conveying complex numerical information. But few clinicians have any training in how to do this effectively.
This module is designed to help clinicians develop and refine the skills required to talk effectively about the benefits and risks of treatment options with patients.

– In medical training, it is easy to become focussed on the medical, technical and knowledge aspects of performing your job. Communication is often perceived to be a ‘soft’ skill, however, it can be taught and learned like a technical skill, and can have more of an impact on adverse patient events than technical skills.
This module examines a range of strategies for effective communication within teams.
– This module covers the importance of patient-centred communication and outlines some of the barriers to achieving patient-centred communication. It also discusses the differences between sympathy and empathy, and concludes with a guide on how to have crucial conversations including open disclosure and breaking bad news.
– This module has been developed by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and shared with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) to support an ongoing commitment in promoting appropriate behaviours in surgical practice and training.
The importance of improving a work environment to one that is psychologically safe for both clinicians and patients will ultimately result in safer care for patients, better standards of surgical training and service provision.
